April 2024:
The MLO Minute: “Planning for Transition into Adulthood for Adolescents with Special Needs”
By Kimberly Caputo, Esq., Senior Counsel, Special Education Philadelphia Region —
OUTCOMES ARE CRITICAL
Each student and his/her/their family has a set of goals. Some goals are immediate, others are short term, and others are more long term. This is also true for students who learn differently and are supported through an IEP (Individualized Education Plan). For students with IEPs, a critical part of the individualized school program includes a TRANSITION PLAN. This is an actual set of specific goals and corresponding SDI (specially designed instruction) that should be designed to focus on the goals AFTER graduation.
Goals can include:
- College,
- Vocational / Trade school,
- Entering the world of work,
- Living independently or transitioning to a supported living arrangement.
In partnership with CASA of Philadelphia (Court Appointed Special Advocates), our firm’s Senior special education attorney in the Philadelphia region, Kimberly Caputo, Esq., was honored to present on this topic.
