The MLO Minute: “Homeschool versus Homebound – What is the Difference?” —
By Alison Kahney, Esq. —
“Homeschool” and “homebound” instruction are two different schooling options that are often confused. It is important to know the difference between the two so that parents/guardians can ensure that they’re selecting the option that matches their child’s needs.
Homeschool in Delaware is considered a “nonpublic school” in that, if you elect to homeschool your child, you are essentially removing them from the district and taking on the responsibility of educating your child. The school district will not provide a curriculum, and parents/guardians will be responsible for providing course work, materials, and supplies.
Homebound instruction is often used when a child requires temporary instruction at home for medical reasons. Homebound instruction is led by a certified teacher but is conducted outside of school, often in the student’s home or in a hospital setting. To the extent possible, the homebound instruction should adhere to the student’s typical in-school curriculum.
