The MLO Minute: OSER’s Q and A to Endrew F. vs. Douglas County School District
Recently, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) issued guidance to School Districts and Parents regarding Endrew F. vs. Douglas County School District. Available to download at https://sites.ed.gov/idea/files/qa-endrewcase-12-07-2017.pdf
This guidance provides some important guidance for IEP Teams. Specifically, the IEP Team should meet throughout the course of the school year if a child is not making expected progress toward his or her annual goals and the IEP Team must revise the IEP to address the lack of progress. Moreover, Parents and other IEP Team members should collaborate and partner to track progress appropriate to the child’s circumstances and School District’s are encouraged to have policies in place to have ongoing communication throughout the school year with Parents to inform them regarding their child’s progress.
The ability of Parents to have an active involvement and become aware of lack a progress earlier than at report card time or their annual IEP meeting will more likely ensure children with special needs are making the appropriate level of progress throughout the school year.
