ABLE Accounts: How They Affect Special Needs Benefits

Since being signed into federal law in 2014, the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act has created a new tool for individuals with special needs to have the use and enjoyment of funds while remaining eligible for necessary resource- and income-dependent public benefits. This program will discuss the provisions of the ABLE Act and its effect on eligibility for public benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. The program will also highlight some of the similarities and differences between various state ABLE programs, and compare and contrast ABLE Accounts to Special Needs Trusts.
